Couples Therapy

By: Bonnie Burset, AMFT

What is couples therapy?

Couples therapy is also known as Marriage Counseling and it is a type of psychotherapy. Couples therapy helps couples recognize and resolve conflicts and improve their relationship.

Over 70% Success

Couples therapy has a success rate of roughly 73% which is 23% greater than the success rate in the 1980s

Benefits:

Couples therapy can be extremely helpful in addressing unresolved conflict and emotional distress in relationships.

Too often couples can get caught in negative interaction patterns that play out as the same conflicts over and over again with no resolution.

Over time, these unresolved issues can cause accumulated hurt, anger and resentment and can lead to partners feeling disconnected and alone in the relationship.

12 Sessions, 66% Import

People who participate in couples counseling participate for an average of 12 sessions, with 66 percent of participants improving in 20 sessions or less.

Couples therapy can help to restore emotional closeness and trust through interrupting these patterns and helping partners learn more effective communication styles to promote greater understanding of each other’s emotional needs and encourage greater intimacy.
